"For decades cotton has been the product of choice as the traditional backing on convertible topping materials. Since cotton is a natural or organic fiber, it must be piece dyed to impart color. The dying process is a topical treatment where color is deposited on the surface of the fiber only. This type coloration does not impart a high level of ultra violet resistance and as such, the piece dyed cotton fabric tends to fade very easily when exposed to sunlight."

"The other major negative aspect associated with organic fibers is that they tend to be susceptible to degradation when exposed to the natural weather elements such as humidity and heat. The result can often be premature aging from mildew and rot. This condition can cause brittleness and a severe loss of strength to the topping material."

"By utilizing solution dyed polyester, the above problems can be negated. Solution dying is not a topical treatment. Rather, the pigment is injected throughout the entire cross section of the fibers as they are extruded. This method of coloration allows for U.V. resistant components to be added to the polymer formulation of the fiber. The result is a fiber that is highly resistant to the elements, especially heat, U.V. exposure (sunlight) and moisture. Solution dyed polyester fibers maintain color, resilience and physical properties as a result of their ability to resist the harmful effects of the elements. In addition to more than doubling tear resistance, the use of solution dyed polyester backing fabrics can significantly increase the service life of convertible toppings."
